You pretty much know fall is on the way, when you start seing beautiful potted mums everywhere you go. Personally – I love them any time of the year and I always place few pots of fully blooming beauties in my front flower bed to spruce up the slowly fading outside blooms.
Here are a few interesting points about mums:
The ancient Chinese reserved them for nobility
Today, florists sell more mum than any other flowers
They come in many colours and seem to last forever – average pot will bloom for 2 months
Make sure you choose plants with lots of buds, but just a few opened flowers
The plant you choose should be bushy and deep green with no limp, wilted or yellow leaves
Display mum is cool, bright place – indoors or out
Hot, dry air will shorten their lives
Water them often, enough to keep the soil moist but not soggy
And if you get a potted mum in the winter, keep removing flowers that are done blooming regularly and don’t throw the pot away when leaves go yellow. Cut it down and nurture til spring – then pot it straight into your garden – it won;t take long for you to have a beautiful new plant that will bring sensational splash of colour to your garden!
